Bay of Fundy, slow

2 days Max 8 Unhurried Coastal & tides, Hiking

ABOUT THIS TRIP

Two days on the world's highest tides with a guide who has watched them her whole life. Eight people, one van, zero rushing.

The tides here move more water twice a day than every river on earth combined, and for six hours of it you can walk on the sea floor. Nancy has watched that happen from the same stretch of shoreline since she was nine.

Two days, eight people, one van. You sleep in Alma, you eat what the boats brought in that morning, and nobody is hurried onto a schedule the water does not keep.

How hard
Gentle — a few hours at a time on mud, cobble and wet rock, at the water’s pace rather than the group’s. If you can manage an uneven beach walk, you can manage this.

THE ECOSCORE

EcoScore Breakdown

4.4

out of 5

Scored on five published criteria.

4/5
Transport impact
One van for the whole group, and no internal flights. The drive from Moncton is the only leg with real fuel cost.
5/5
Local sourcing
Every meal is bought within twenty minutes of Alma, most of it off the wharf that morning.
5/5
Group size
Eight people, capped. The flats can take it; a coach tour cannot.
4/5
Community benefit
The guide, the guesthouse and the boat are all locally owned. The van is rented from Moncton.
4/5
Operator transparency
Nancy gave us her supplier list and her pricing without being asked twice.

Down onto the ocean floor

1

Alma, NB

Meet at noon, walk the flats at low water, eat on the wharf.

Nancy meets the group at the Alma wharf at noon, which on this coast is a flexible promise: the tide sets the schedule, and the tide is different every day. Boots are handed out, the tide chart is read aloud, and then you walk out.

For six hours the sea floor is a country of its own — mudstone ledges, barnacle flats, a forest of kelp still standing upright. Back on the wharf, dinner is whatever the boats landed and nobody sets an alarm.

Watching it come back in

2

Cape Enrage

Follow the coast road and watch yesterday’s path disappear.

Breakfast is early, because the water is already turning. The van runs the coast road to Cape Enrage, where the Fundy tides pile against a lighthouse that has watched them since 1840.

You watch the same flats you walked yesterday vanish under thirty feet of water in about an hour — the plainest demonstration of what this bay does twice a day. Lunch is at the Cape, and the van has you in Moncton by mid-afternoon.

Verified Operator

We listed Tidewalk because Nancy turned down our suggestion to run a second group on the same tide. That is the answer we were hoping for.
